Working with digital sources which are typically distributed over separate collections, with new forms of scientific communication and new, alternative ways of publication, calls for novel research environments which provide adequate support for this new type of scholarly work. Department 1 is highly engaged in providing scholars with such working environments and in promoting their use. If well designed, such working environments and tools do not only facilitate research but in fact have the capacity to initiate new research questions and approaches.
