Max Planck Institute for the History of Science

The MPIWG Library

The library is the central service department for research information and documentation for the scholars working at the MPIWG. It is designed to provide the best service available for research in an efficient, timely manner, tailored to the needs of its users.

As an internal facility for the research groups at the institute, privileges for accessing the collections and services are restricted to members, visiting scholars, and cooperation partners of the institute.

The library offers a wide range of digital and conventional services. Its collections currently hold 65.000 volumes in print, including 2,500 rare books, and over 25,000 historical materials in microform. Original archival resources contain some 10,000 items, mainly papers by 20th-century physicists (e.g., Gehrcke, Rupp, Einstein). Electronic resources provide access to over 30,000 e-journals and more than 200 full-text and reference databases. Complementing the collections, an active Interlibrary Loan Service networks the library to the holdings of other research libraries. A research-driven program is working to present high-quality digital versions of sources from the library collections, thereby also making them available to a wider scholarly community through the Internet.
