The MPIWG is part of an international network of research institutions and researchers in the history of science. The Institute regularly welcomes visiting scholars and maintains close research connections with a number of institutes around the world and in various fields.
The transdisciplinary Anthropocene Project explores the manifold implications of the proposed geological “age of mankind” using research and presentation methods from the arts and sciences.
Since its inception in 2011, Department I of the MPIWG has been a founding member of the Berliner Antike-Kolleg (BAK), a cooperation project of Berlin’s six major institutions on research on the ancient world. In particular, it is involved in the organization of the Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Sciences (BerGSAS).
As a forum for new and shared research projects as well as for public dialog, the Berlin Center for the History of Knowledge aims to increase Berlin’s visibility as a site of research potential and to anchor the multidisciplinary topic “history of knowledge” in teaching and research.
The concept of the cross-disciplinary research agenda Convivencia aimed at developing an intellectual and institutional infrastructure for an investigation of cross-cultural processes of knowledge transfer and transformation in different domains (the sciences, medicine, philosophy, technology, the arts and the humanities).
The work of the Collaborative Research Centre seeks to overcome the highly compartmentalized way in which studies in antiquity and its reception have been conducted in the past. Its programmatic aim is to map the interdisciplinary contexts in which the productive appropriations and transformations of the ancient sciences and arts are embedded.
The Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI) represents the efforts of an international group of Assyriologists, museum curators, and historians of science to make available online the form and content of cuneiform inscriptions dating from the beginning of writing, ca. 3350 BC, until the end of the pre-Christian era.
DARIAH offers a social and technical research infrastructure for digital-working researchers from the humanities and cultural studies.
The International Association for the Study of Silk Road Textiles is an international association jointly established by organizations (including universities, museums, libraries, archeology institutes, research institutes, or groups) related to the studies of the Silk Road.
ISMI is a component of the Rational Sciences in Islam (RaSI) project centered at McGill University, including an object-relational database created to store information on the rational sciences within the scientific, philosophical, and theological traditions of Islam before 1900 CE.
The disciplines of the history of science, medicine, and technology are rethinking themselves in global terms. In order to widen the scope of both subject matter and scholarly discussion, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, in collaboration with several worldwide institutions for the History of Science, proposes a pilot project: a two-volume, multi-language reader that will translate into Chinese ten influential historical articles or book chapters on science, technology, or medicine published in English during the last 25 years (since 1990) on any topic and epoch in our fields.
At the heart of the Excellence Cluster stands the interplay of space and knowledge in the formation and transformation of ancient cultures and societies.
The Virtual Laboratory is a platform where historians publish and discuss their research on experimentation in the life sciences, art, and technology.
Research staff at the MPIWG teach history of science at universities in Berlin and further afield; we have arrangements for regular teaching exchanges with the following universities:
- Department of History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine
- Unit for History and Philisophy of Science
- Fishbein Center
- Cohn Institute
