Information for Newcomers
Information for Future and Current Scholars
The MPIWG Welcome Website has been designed as an information portal for new and existing scholars at the institute. The various sections provide information on preparing for a stay in Berlin. It is also intended to help scholars to get settled into the Institute, Berlin/Germany, and passes on firsthand advice from current and former guests.
Access to this page is restricted to the institute’s members, and future scholars who hold a contract or formal letter of invitation.
Below are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions, with links to the Welcome Website.
The Welcome Page Whom to Ask for Help section provides a list of contacts.
The MPIWG is happy to assist with finding accommodation. Options used by past and current scholars include private accommodation, IBZ academic apartments, and Humboldt University guesthouses. Information on the various Berlin districts can be found on the Firsthand Advice area of the Welcome Page.
Those of you with children should consider planning childcare or schooling in advance of your arrival, since places can be limited.
You may bring your computer, but you do not have to—scholars are provided with one upon arrival. You will also have an email address (active shortly prior to your arrival, until four weeks after you leave the institute), a scholar website profile, and access to IT Support—read more about MPIWG computing here.
All new fellows and guests have access to the MPIWG Library. You are invited to attend the official library introduction, held on a Thursday at the beginning of each month, in order to get full library privileges and make best use of the resources. Invitations are sent out to your MPIWG e-mail account. You will also have access to our interlibrary loan system, which means you can leave all of your own books at home—once you have accepted a place at the Institute, you can email the library to request interlibrary loans in advance.
Yes! You and all family members traveling with you will need adequate health insurance for the duration of your stay in Germany. Health insurance must cover medical treatment for acute illness and accidents in Germany, as well as return travel to your home country should this be medically necessary. Read more on our Health Insurance page.
We recommend that you plan childcare or schooling in advance of your arrival in Berlin—read here for information on babysitters, kindergarten, and schools. Upon arrival in Germany you can apply for child benefit. At the Institute you will also have access to playrooms, and nearby playgrounds. Some recommendations on fun activities and good schools in Berlin can be found here.
The MPIWG has an Equal Opportunities policy in place with an emphasis on working and parenting—read more on our policies here.
Scholars must sign a document upon arrival that specifies his/her relation with the Institute. If your contract implies payment, you must set an appointment with personnel staff to sign the contract and provide bank details—read more on the Upon Arrival area of the Welcome Page. Payment is backdated each month, so we recommend that you bring enough to cover the first month of your stay in Berlin.
You will receive a building keycard and door key upon arrival. Read more about building access times and lost key charges on the Welcome Website.
