Alfredo Thiermann

Visiting Predoctoral Fellow (Mar 2018-Mai 2018)

Alfredo Thiermann is an architect born in Santiago de Chile. Through his design practice and theoretical research, he explores the intersection between architecture and different media, from sound installations and film scenography to single family houses, public buildings, and large-scale infrastructures. He has taught and lectured at Princeton University, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad San Sebastián, and other institutions. Alfredo’s written and built work has been published in Revista ARQ, TRACE magazine, zeppelin, Potlatch, Real Review, Thresholds, and Domus, and has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago, the Istanbul Design Biennial, Museo MAC Quinta Normal, and Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho, among other institutions.

His built projects include Dynamics of the Void (2013) at Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes; Artifact Nr. I (2012) in Paine; House I (2015) in Lago Llanquihue; and the Design Biennial (2010) in Santiago de Chile. He was a finalist in the Young Architects Program organized by MoMA in Santiago de Chile and a nominee for the MCHAP Emerging Architect Prize awarded by the IIT in Chicago.

Alfredo studied architecture, receiving his professional degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Chile and a Masters degree from Princeton University. He is a PhD fellow at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) in Zurich and a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, developing a project on the architecture of radio. He lives, works, and takes care of Pedro Tristán and Juan Nataniel in Zurich, Santiago, and Berlin.
